Thursday Thoughts: How Did Your Dog Get Their Name?

January 24, 2019 by Rebecca Montgomery 4 Comments

Thursday Thoughts is a new weekly blog post series that asks pet owners questions about their pets or pet ownership and shares their responses. Get ready for lots of heartwarming stories and cute photos of animals! Have an idea for a question? Email us at rebecca@thedelightfuldapple.com.

Welcome to the new series on Delightful Dapple, Thursday Thoughts! I have thought about doing this series for quite a while and finally decided to make it happen. I wanted to start a weekly blog post that shared the experiences and stories of pet owners across the world and also helped spread the word about really adorable dogs and dog accounts.

I hope this new series leaves you with a smile and lots of happiness. So without further ado let’s get to our question and the responses!

The Question of the Week

Our question of the week asked dog owners how their dog got their name. We got an array of cute and creative ways dog owners came up with their dog’s names.

I always have found the stories and meanings behind names interesting. Bonnie came to me already named and the woman I got her from told me she and her siblings were named after Stephen King characters (if you can tell me what book has a character named Bonnie in it I’d love to know!). My other dog Raigen also came to us already named while for my dog Allie, my mom just thought it was a cute name.

Of my four dogs, my favorite story is probably for my Gordon Setter Layla’s name. I picked her out the day she was born since her mother was my grandmother’s dog. I was only in 5th grade and named her after a character in my favorite show at the time Winx Club (a show about fairies). I later learned when I took Arabic in college that Layla means night and loved how even the meaning of the name was quite fitting for her.

Here are how other dog owners came up with their pup’s names.

“My pawrents picked my name before they met me. They were driving back from a week-long kayaking trip across Scotland and knew they were ready to share their house with a dog again. They wanted a Great Dane, so were thinking of names that went well with a Great Dane, but were also Scottish names. Angus, or Gus the Great Dane was the one they chose. About four weeks later they found me being advertised online and the rest is history (I was called Opie when they met me).” –Gus, Great Dane, @gus_greatdane

“Bijou was our first, and was so beautiful and tiny when we got her. We talked over many names, but when we thought of “Bijou” and looked up various meanings we found that in French it meant “Jewel”, and in English a definition said it meant “Small but perfectly formed”. We knew our search was over!”-Bijou, Bella, Jole, Dachshunds, @the_hotdog_squad

A post shared by Hudson The Mini Doxie (@hudson_theminidoxie)

“Hudson already had his “name” from where we got him. He was way too cute and his name was adorably fitting to change so we ran with it. I even ordered a name tag with a mountain above a river on it to go with it (aka the Hudson River). If we got another pup we want to keep up the body of water names because they’re fun and outdoorsy.”-Hudson, Dachshund, @hudson_theminidoxie
