Welcome to the new series on Delightful Dapple, Thursday Thoughts! I have thought about doing this series for quite a while and finally decided to make it happen. I wanted to start a weekly blog post that shared the experiences and stories of pet owners across the world and also helped spread the word about really adorable dogs and dog accounts.
I hope this new series leaves you with a smile and lots of happiness. So without further ado let’s get to our question and the responses!
The Question of the Week

Our question of the week asked dog owners how their dog got their name. We got an array of cute and creative ways dog owners came up with their dog’s names.
I always have found the stories and meanings behind names interesting. Bonnie came to me already named and the woman I got her from told me she and her siblings were named after Stephen King characters (if you can tell me what book has a character named Bonnie in it I’d love to know!). My other dog Raigen also came to us already named while for my dog Allie, my mom just thought it was a cute name.
Of my four dogs, my favorite story is probably for my Gordon Setter Layla’s name. I picked her out the day she was born since her mother was my grandmother’s dog. I was only in 5th grade and named her after a character in my favorite show at the time Winx Club (a show about fairies). I later learned when I took Arabic in college that Layla means night and loved how even the meaning of the name was quite fitting for her.
Here are how other dog owners came up with their pup’s names.

“A lot of people think I’m named after the ball in the movie Castaway. But my mom named [me] after a Wilson tennis ball. She loves tennis!” – Wilson, Dachshund, @wilsonwienerdog
“I got my name because I had a different name before my mummy renamed me. She thought I was short and sassy like the singer Lulu so that’s how I got my name.” –Lulu, Dachshund, @lulu_the_mini_dachshund
“Mom has named all of her pets after rappers, so she knew she wanted to pick a rapper name for me. She came up with a list of rappers she liked and respected, including Busta Rhymes. After she had met me twice and really understood my personality, she thought that Busta fit me!”-Busta, English Setter, @bustadahustla
“I’m named after Chewbacca from Star Wars. My mum wanted to name me Chewie and when there was a Star Wars litter she had to inform. So it’s not only the name my humans call me but also my official pedigree name!”-Chewie, Dachshund, @teckelchewie
https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs98GY8AZ1v/“Tempestina is my official pedigree name. My humans don’t want to change it because it’s particular. Tempestina is the name of a little Italian pasta!”–
“Trixie got her name from the old show The Honeymooners. Trixie was her upstairs neighbor who was married to Norton. I always thought if I got a boy that would be his name.”-Trixie, Dachshund, @trixiethedaschund
“Cody and his siblings were named after things, places in Wyoming since the breeders were on their way home from there when his momma went into labor. I kept it since me and my daughter’s names both start with a C it seemed to fit well. So he is named after Cody, Wyoming!”-Cody, Mini Australian Shepherd, @codytheminiaussie

“Varick was from the V litter, and it is German for protector and defender. Timber, we wanted an outdoorsy name.”-Varick and Timber, German Shepherds, @blkgermanshep
“My human sister gave me my name. I was a gift for her 7th birthday.”-Cricket, Dachshund, @cricket_the_doxie
“We had it narrowed down to Biscuit or Gracie and couldn’t decide, so we asked our friends and family to vote on Facebook.”-Biscuit, Cavapoo, @adventures.with.biscuit
“Boba was originally going to be named Potato, but that was too many syllables. His dad had a pug named Jango Fett before him, so we decided to name him after Jango’s son in Star Wars: Boba Fett!”-Boba, Pug, @puggyboba
“[The] humans wanted a pair of names but more sophisticated (hopefully) than fun. They thought of their favorite trip to Italy where they visited lots of cities, Lucca and Siena

“I got my name Finley Wilweenie because of my pawrents last name and I am a weenie dog! They picked Finley because they just liked it!”-Finley Wilweenie, Dachshund, @finleywilweenie
“Mochi (chocolate) is soft, sweet and oooh so good. Little Mochi was the same way when I first got him. I fell in love and never looked back.”-Mochi, Dachshund, @mochi.doxie
“Hudson already had his “name” from where we got him. He was way too cute and his name was adorably fitting to change so we ran with it. I even ordered a name tag with a mountain above a river on it to go with it (aka the Hudson River). If we got another pup we want to keep up the body of water names because they’re fun and outdoorsy.”-Hudson, Dachshund, @hudson_theminidoxie
